Authorities pursue international justice over Stones Corner infant assault

Authorities pursue international justice over Stones Corner infant assault

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) and Australian Federal Police (AFP) say they remain committed to securing justice for an infant who was seriously injured in a random assault at Stones Corner last year.

On 27 August 2024, a stranger allegedly poured hot coffee on the child. The alleged offender left Australia on 31 August 2024, sparking an international investigation.

The AFP confirmed today that the individual has since been located in China. Federal police are now working with Chinese authorities on options to progress the case, noting that China has extraterritorial jurisdiction to prosecute its citizens for conduct committed overseas.

“The AFP values the ongoing cooperation from Chinese authorities and their shared commitment to pursue all avenues for justice in light of the alleged offender’s location,” a spokesperson said.

The QPS and AFP say they will continue to work in partnership to explore all available legal pathways.

Brisbane’s Regional Crime Co-ordinator, Detective Acting Superintendent Paul Dalton, said the victim’s family has been informed of the update.

Police are asking anyone with information related to the investigation to contact Policelink, or to provide information anonymously through Crime Stoppers. Reference number: QP2401452454.
