Residents across Brisbane’s south have been urged to stay indoors after a major industrial blaze tore through a paper recycling facility in Rocklea on Monday afternoon.
Emergency services were called to Suscatand Street just after 2.30pm following reports of a fire inside the Visy Recycling site, which also houses a rubbish removal and skip bin business.
Queensland Fire Department (QFD) confirmed eight crews and 28 firefighters were dispatched to the scene, with thick black smoke seen pouring from the 100x30 metre shed packed with wastepaper. Footage shows flames engulfing the building’s roof and a tractor inside the yard.
The fire was brought under control about 3.20pm, but crews remain on site working to fully extinguish hotspots.
Police said there were no reports of injuries, while Queensland Ambulance Service had a crew on standby as the blaze spread through the shed and surrounding yard.
QFD has issued a smoke warning for Oxley, Corinda and Seventeen Mile Rocks, with residents advised to close windows and doors, remain indoors where possible, and keep respiratory medication close by.
Motorists are also being asked to avoid the area, and authorities have warned the public not to fly drones as they can interfere with firefighting aircraft.
Investigations into the cause of the fire are ongoing.
