DovaFM is reporting on a story outside of our usual patch today, as tributes flow across the United States for Judge Frank Caprio, the man known worldwide as the “nicest judge in the world.”
Caprio, who passed away peacefully at age 88 after a long battle with pancreatic cancer, became a viral sensation for his compassionate approach in the courtroom. Millions came to know him through his television series Caught in Providence, where his mix of warmth, humour, and humanity turned routine municipal court cases into moving reminders of kindness.
Born in Providence, Rhode Island in 1936, Caprio’s life reflected the immigrant values instilled by his Italian parents. Before pursuing law, he taught American government at a local high school, studying law at night while supporting his young family. He went on to serve as a municipal court judge from 1985 until his retirement in 2023.
His courtroom clips spread across social media over the past decade, often showing him waiving fines for struggling families, encouraging young people, and offering second chances when they were needed most.
Earlier this year, Caprio spoke about his fight with cancer, asking his supporters simply to keep him in their prayers. Despite completing radiation treatment in 2024, he faced setbacks in recent months before his passing this week.
Caprio is survived by his wife Joyce, their five children, seven grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren.
While DovaFM usually focuses on news closer to Brisbane, Ipswich and Moreton Bay, the life and passing of Judge Caprio is a reminder of the impact compassion and kindness can have no matter where in the world it’s found.
