Court to Decide on Brisbane Protest Route Over Story Bridge

The Queensland Police Service (QPS) has confirmed it will seek a court ruling on plans for a protest scheduled in Brisbane on 24 August.

Police and protest organisers took part in mediation on 18 August, but an agreement on the proposed route could not be reached. Under the Peaceful Assembly Act, QPS will now lodge documentation with the Brisbane Magistrates Court, which will determine whether the march can proceed as intended.

The QPS has raised several concerns about the proposed use of the Story Bridge, citing risks to both participants and the wider community. Police said the bridge is not designed for large pedestrian gatherings and that current footpath closures create additional safety hazards.

Authorities also warned of “serious disruption” to traffic, emergency vehicle access, and local businesses if the protest were to cross the bridge. Police have suggested alternative routes, including nearby pedestrian bridges such as the Kangaroo Point Bridge.

“While the QPS respects the right to peacefully assemble, this must be balanced with the need to ensure public safety and minimise disruption to the broader community,” a QPS spokesperson said.

The court is expected to hear the matter later this week. In the meantime, police say they will maintain a strong presence on the day of the protest to ensure public safety, manage traffic, and respond to incidents if required.
